The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University
of Lagos branch, has said that it will sue the Minister of Education,
Professor Ruqayyatu Rufai for addressing the institution as Moshood
Abiola University (MAULAG) at public functions.
The
chairman of the union, Dr Karo Ogbinaka, said this at a news conference
tagged, “Wrongful reappointment of Professor Barinemi Fakae as the Vice
Chancellor of River State University of Science and Technology,” by the
institution’s visitor, the state governor, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, on
Thursday.
He said: “We have been watching the minister at public
functions, addressing UNILAG as MAULAG despite a court order that the
name UNILAG should remain, pending proper legislation on the amendment
bill that sets up the institution at the National Assembly and, of
course, the consideration of the university’s community.”
According
to him, the minister had addressed UNILAG as MAULAG at a stakeholders’
meeting in Abuja, but was cautioned but she had refused to desist from
this anomaly.
“We are seriously watching her to address UNILAG
as MAULAG again, after which we would sue her for contempt of court,”
Ogbinaka said.
On River State University of Science and
Technology, where the lecturers are currently on an indefinite strike,
Ogbinaka said that the national body of ASUU had taken a position and
directed that every branch should observe a day solidarity strike to
support the agitation of its counterparts in River State.
He
stated that the lecturers at RSUST had embarked on indefinite strike
due to illegal appointment of Professor Fakae as the vice chancellor
despite that the man could not scale through the interview conducted by
the Joint Selection Committee presided over by Justice A.G Karibi-Whyte.
