Army impounds bomb-making materials in Kaduna, detains suspects
Alarge cache of suspected bomb-making materials was yesterday intercepted by the Nigerian Army at a roadblock near Kafanchan, Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State. According to an eyewitness, the suspects whose identities were not disclosed at the time of filing this report were heading to Kafanchan from Kagoro end of the area when the army, at about 10a.m intercepted them.
The eyewitness added that the army immediately handed them over to Kafanchan divisional police station for further investigation. But Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Adenaike, told Daily Sun on phone that the army later took back the suspects from the police custody. “So I cannot speak for the army; it is not within my jurisdiction to speak for the army.”
However, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 1 Mechanised Nigerian Army Division, Kaduna, Col. Sani Usman Kukasheka, failed to pick his mobile phone when called to comment on the arrest. As at the time of filing this report, the army authorities had not spoken on the incident.
Daily Sun further gathered that the suspects were equally carrying some holy books and beads, giving the impression as if they were on spiritual and holy mission. “I saw the bomb-making materials and other religious materials that were seized from the suspects but I did not see the suspects because they were immediately moved into the police cell at Kafanchan.
“On hearing the news of the arrest of people carrying bomb-making equipment, many residents rushed to the police station to take a look at them but they could not see them because they were in the cell, and police were driving away people from the station in order not to cause a scene,” the eyewitness added.
